Located at a perennially sunny location between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, Florida is the 3rd most populous state in the US. With famous cities like Miami and Jacksonville, Florida is known for its warm and sunny climate and a fully beach influenced lifestyle. The state was one of the first in the history of continental America to be visited by the European settlers, when Spanish conquistadors came during the early 15th century. This is also one of the main reasons for the large Hispanic population in Florida as compared to other states in the US. It is also popular as a tourist destination owing to its history, flashy beaches, warm climate and a variety of iconic American wildlife species. Florida also sports the longest coastline in the United States which stretches to around 1,350 miles. The state was named ‘La Florida’ (The Flowery) by the Spanish when the landed here around Easter season when flowers are in full bloom in Florida. If you are looking for reasons to visit Florida, here are some interesting places that will make up your mind.
I love Florida. I can’t get enough of it and I would love to live there. My husband (Todd) loves to fish and I love dolphins, so every year we exchange our timeshare for a different spot in Florida. This year we went to North Redington Beach, which is in the Tampa area on the Gulf Coast. We like being on the Gulf side instead of the Atlantic because of the low surf which is nice for shore fishing or snorkeling around looking for dolphins and manatees! We usually have many dolphin sightings and we were hoping to see some again this year. We did see dolphins swimming along the coastline, but not any manatees. I also try to be on the lookout for turtle nests. I know I’ll never be lucky enough to see the turtles coming or going, so the nests are as close as I will get. A few days after we arrived, a new turtle nest was discovered in front of the next resort. Continue reading →
I can cross another one off of my bucket list! I’ve wanted to snorkel with the manatees for a long time now and I finally did it. My husband and I were staying in the Clearwater, Florida area for the week, so we drove up to Crystal River for the day. We made our reservations with Crystal Lodge Dive Center. They were the first in the area to offer manatee snorkeling tours. They are located behind the Best Western Motel in Crystal River. They are right on the river, so once you get your gear, you just walk to the boat and you are ready to go. Continue reading →
