Cruising is a fun way to enjoy a vacation and still get to stop off at different ports to explore, and you only have to unpack once! My friend and I took a five night Carnival Cruise from New Orleans with three stops and we picked our shore excursions of Xel-Há, Tulum and a snorkeling catamaran cruise in Cozumel.
We didn’t pick out our shore excursions online, so that was the first thing we had to do after we got on board. As we were looking at the excursions list and deciding which ones we wanted to do, a guy comes over to us and starts hitting on my friend! We had only been on board for five minutes! She has one of those outgoing bubbly personalities, plus she’s pretty darn cute, so it’s no wonder, but after only five minutes? Impressive. She chatted with him a little bit, and since we were on a ship, we would see him again. Where else is anyone going? Whether or not anything came of this encounter, you won’t find out from me because just like Vegas, “What happens on the ship, stays on the ship!”
We found our room and had the newsletter, towel animal and mints waiting for us on our turned down beds. Does anyone need a towel animal in their room? No, but it is one more way to make the guest feel special, plus it’s just fun. The newsletter came out daily and was packed full of information on activities, games, meals and shopping. There was a lot – we would be exhausted if we tried to do everything the ship had to offer. Yes, there is more to cruising than just eating and gambling! Oh but wait, is there?
One of the best parts of cruising was the creatively presented food for the midnight buffet. Everyone was impressed and they let us go through first to take pictures, then we went through to get our food. We toured the kitchen before the buffet and saw one of the employees working on an ice sculpture – that is a talent, so is carving all of the food for display!
Do you really want to eat dinner at midnight? With all of the activities on the ship keeping you occupied, you may not even notice it’s midnight, plus they only had the midnight buffet on one of the nights. There are plenty of other places to get meals too. They also had a more formal Captain’s dinner, which we did. We had an enjoyable evening meeting new people at our table.
When we docked in Cozumel, we found the catamaran company and got ready for our snorkeling/booze cruise. The weather wasn’t the best, overcast and dreary, but that didn’t matter since we would be underwater looking at all of the fishes. No drinking until we were done with our water activities. Fun haters! Just teasing, safety first. We jumped in the water with our masks, fins and snorkels all on and my friend and I swam around for our adventure. We had underwater cameras, so we were going nuts taking pictures. Then we wanted to bob down but we had life vests on. We did slip them off a couple of times to get down to take pictures…shhh, don’t tell anyone we were naughty.
After snorkeling we got to hang out at the beach for a while to just talk while hanging out on floaties, play volleyball or go horseback riding. Then we got back on the boat for the drinking part. They had a few different choices. I don’t kid myself into thinking I could ever keep up with my friend’s alcohol intake. She’s not a professional drinker by any means, I’m just a complete lightweight, and I’m kind of done after a couple of drinks. I was sitting on the front of the catamaran in the rain trying to watch for dolphins for a little while, then I joined in the fun, and yep, I had more than two. One of the ladies that was at our Captain’s dinner table was on the cruise, along with the gentleman that hit on my friend after boarding. He was with a group of guys that were celebrating after losing weight in a group they were in. That is pretty awesome to accomplish that goal and then reward yourself later, which is always a good idea.
With all of our shore excursions behind us, we could get back to the fun ship activities. So much to do! Cruising was a blast and I would love to do it again. I would love to go again with Lisa, that would be round two of super fun, but I would also like to take my husband on a cruise since food is his main focus and he loves to “feed”. What is he a vampire? Neither of us got seasick, but we talked after the cruise and each of us felt like we were rocking from side to side for two days after the trip. Weird that I didn’t feel that way while I was on the cruise, the ship was so enormous I didn’t feel any movement. Hmm. Well, I didn’t say I was the most perceptive person on the planet. If you are thinking of cruising, you should do it just to try it. It’s FABULOUS!
